Improving education quality at the University of Papua New Guinea

Work has commenced on Australian-funded upgrades to security lighting on key campus footpaths and roads at the University of Papua New Guinea (PNG). These upgrades will contribute to increased personal safety, in particular for women.

Australian Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, the Hon Brett Mason, said that Australia and PNG shared a common commitment to improve the quality of education in PNG.

“Improving facilities at PNG’s national university is an important step to achieving that vision,” Senator Mason said.

Professor Mellam, UPNG’s Vice Chancellor, agreed, saying “Improved lighting at UPNG will increase personal safety on campus, particularly for female teachers and students, and lead to an environment that is more conducive to learning.”

Australia is delivering the package in partnership with UPNG and the Office of Higher Education, as part of the Joint Understanding on Further Bilateral Cooperation on Health, Education and Law and Order.
